The Enemy Within Star Trek Journal By James Lynch
This episode, The Enemy Within shows the split and personification of Captain Kirk’s two distinct characteristics.
An accident created different bodies possessing the good in one, and a vicious one in the other body. You can just imagine the kind and docile Kirk being agreeable with everybody, while the animalistic emotions out of control Kirk was causing problems all over the Enterprise Starship.
You may view it at as seeing the reasonable side of Kirk and the unreasonable side. Or another reference to Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde written by Robert Louis Stevenson. Some will say this is Mr. Shatner’s best acting in the series. In observation of the whole Star Trek series, I’m not in total agreement of the statement, it is his “best” work in the series.
It could be due to the fact, the “Enemy Within” does not rank anywhere near my favorite Star Trek original series episodes. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed The Enemy Within; however, you will appreciate why and when I list my top 4 to quite possibly 8 episodes as being so ranked.
In this episode, you be sure to watch Spock’s finesse with the Vulcan nerve pinch.
