Daily Appreciate The Big and Little Things

The Need for Little Things

There are the big things that bring a great amount of excitement and appreciation to our lives. Think about it, how often do the big events happen? The kind of events that bring great, great joy! This is why they are “big” right? The happy endorphins produced through the brain’s pituitary gland goes off the scale!

Still, life is not meant to run none stop without having time to reflect on past, present and future projects. Who wouldn’t say they aren’t “busy” today? “Busy” doing what? People will agree most are daily engaged in what is a priority for them.” A high number of the population falls into one or both of these categories.

· Busy making a living

· Busy looking for big recreation

Is life meant to be so much more? Is there room to add more items for enjoying life into our daily routine?

Take a moment of pause now to read this poem. By Author James L.

The Need for Little Things

It is often gracious to do the little things. The Need For Little Things-Penmenship

Without them, people will miss out the joy they bring.

A simple greeting with a smile.

It lets the person know you are worth their while.

Running errands for people to show you care.

As days go by, they will remember you were there.

What would life be like without the little things?

It just seems like we wouldn’t notice any blessings.

Many little things turn into a big gesture.

For friendships, it turns into love of a warm vesture.

I have a pride in my scars, not because they show I’m strong but because they helped me to see I was wrong. They taught me a lesson each one their own. They show of a battle I lost and stood alone.

The scar on my heart shows of a time I believed in him too quickly.

The scar on my hand shows of a time I gave too freely.

The scar on my lip showed of a time my words were like venom.

Lessons learned Poem Page 2 By MakaylaThe scar on my leg shows of a time I ran too far and too fast.

The scar on my cheek shows of a time I didn’t walk away.

The scar on my back shows of a time I turned too trusting.

Even after all of that I promise I’ll become myself with time.

School Lunch-Nutritious?

Smoked Fish Salad

Writing-in-Notebook_thumb.jpgIt is early in the morning and the alarm clock goes off. Already the average person probably has at least 10-20 assignments on their to-do list if not more-even school-aged children. Sadly, eating a healthy meal may not be one of them. Which is easier? A toaster pastry or eggs and ham? Thankfully many schools offer healthy breakfast and lunches…or do they? Let us discuss what choices a child or teenager has to choose from at school including what is available and what kids are most likely to choose. Then we can talk about how students can keep a healthy diet through their school years.

At the first lunch bell something is different. The vending machines are not working. To prevent kids from drinking soda with their lunch, many schools lock down vending machines during lunch periods. So what do the lunch lines offer? Well, of course it differs from school to school. Just about every school offers a hot lunch that is nutritious, but may or may not attract the appetitFaculty Meeting on School Luncheses of hungry students. So, what if the hot lunch is not appealing? Then they may opt for a cold deli-style sandwich or a hot slice of pizza.  These options can normally be had as a meal with either a fresh salad bar or canned food offerings as well as a milk carton. The problem? These meals cost anywhere from $2-4 dollars. That may not seem like much, but for the same price the students could probably get two cookies, a bag of chips, and a sports drink. Which would appeal more to the student? Although certain students can get free or reduced lunch, the average person may choose to cut their costs to pocket more lunch money, and not make the healthy choices they should.

So how can students keep healthy? Make sure they are educated. The schools may encourage healthy meals, but the students need to fully understand the benefits of eating healthy meals, as well as the risks of eating unhealthy, to be motivated to make good decisionsSmoked Fish Salad. Cold lunch (sack lunch-as some call it), is always an inexpensive option. This can save much money, and ensure that your student is eating a balanced, healthy, meal. Those who may be on a tight financial budget should remember to apply for the free or reduced lunch program if need be.Tofu Vegetables Rice

In the fast-paced world of today, many sacrifice their health for the sake of convenience or to save money. It is simply not worth it. Habits are formed during childhood and the teenage years that can be beneficial or detrimental for the rest of our lives. The earlier we start, the easier it will be to make a healthy, happy future for ourselves and our students.Students With Lunches In Backpack

Dale – A Powerful Yet Gentle Horse

Dale The Horse Jumping

Throughout history, horses have worked with men and women to accomplish tasks. Depending on the owner’s preferences, horses have been used from “beast of burden” to royal chariot carriers. Sadly, at times, they have been used as weapons of war. People have different views on how intelligent these animals are. Some say they are temperamental. Still, horses are fast learners when they have owners who are correctly teaching them and consistent in their methods. The way a horse is talked to and treated has a major bearing on its ability to learn. A horse associates tone with commands. It is not only what the trainer says, but how he or she says it. So in another way of saying it, horses emotionally associate different commands in positive and negative ways.

Listen to Lauren, horse owner, share her equestrian experience with (Glebedale) Dale. Her experience with training and jumping horses gives helpful advice on the treatment of these creatures and how they are reciprocal animals.

What is Dale’s personality like?

Lauren says: Dale is quite a nervous horse when you work with him in the stable. He doesn’t Dale The Horse Jumpinglike his face being touched and things like that, but he is the gentlest of horses, especially when you are riding him. He is such a gentleman and will do anything for you.

Question Lauren we have heard people use similar expressions, “the gentlest of horses” before when they are riding a horse. Give us more of how Dale’s temperament is when he is not in riding or competition mode.

Lauren says: He is so friendly as well and follows me around the stable or the yard and leans his head on me as if he is giving me cuddles. When I am upset he always seems even more comforting as if he knows I am sad.  He is just like a best friend as he seems to listen to everything I say.

Dale The Horse

Question Lauren What do you feed Dale and how much?

Lauren shares: Their ideal weight depends on the breed of the horse really, you can tell by looking at them if they are overweight or underweight. Horses are always out in the fields grazing but when we bring them in we give them a big feed and in the winter they also get hay out in the field.

Thank you Lauren for sharing your equestrian experience with us. It shows why horses have been used throughout history to help men and women in farming and transportation. By listening to people like Lauren, we find out horses are not just instinctual but they have feelings too.Dale The Horse Smiling

Morning of Reflection

It grabbed you and stole you away so fast.

I watched helplessly.

I did nothing because there was nothing I could do.

I couldn’t go in the room, I couldn’t watch you die.

I’m sorry I didn’t say goodbye.

I miss you being in my life.

I miss the little things you did.

I miss having you there.

You were everything, my nurse, my bodyguard, my best friend, my teacher, my mom.

I was so young when you died…I still understood. I understood that you weren’t going to come home.

People asked me if I was ok, I lied.

I told them I was fine.

I stayed strong, that’s what I’m supposed to do right?

The truth is I cry at night, when I’m all alone.

I don’t want people to see me like that, see me weak and vulnerable.

I miss you so much. The thought that I may see you again doesn’t stop the pain. I wish it did. I hope one day it will.

I love you mom.

Dedicated to my friend who lost his mom years ago to cancer…. We love you Julie.

Turned Another Year Older–Why We Need To Keep Growing

When a teenager turns 18 they are considered adults in some lands. It is an age so many look forward to in order to make their mark on the world! By the age of 21, surely we know all there is to know about life; right?

Granted, the environment a person lives in does affect an individual. At thirteen some have seen so much, experienced so much, that they had to grow up quickly.

There is a saying,

It is not the year of the car but the mileage.

Example: You buy a brand new Maxima for the year 2013. It has zero mileage showing on the car’s odometer.

1968-StingRay Car 2012 Nissan-Maxima Car

Your neighbor has a 1968 Classic Sting Ray with 10,000 miles showing on the odometer.

In one year you drive the 2013 Maxima all over the place. All through the rain, snow storms and the hot desert you drove the vehicle. Good thing you kept up with the car maintenance. By the end of the year, 20,000 miles are placed on the car.

Your neighbor’s 1968 Sting Ray only has 10, 400 miles on it due to sitting in a garage. After all, it is a classic. The owner drives it on Sundays or to special events. No long distance driving for this car.

In one year, the Maxima needed more oil changes than the Sting Ray. Why? The Maxima is used to drive in all weather conditions. It experiences much harsher treatment than the Sting Ray sitting in a garage. Though the Maxima is newer, at the rate mentioned above, it will age a lot quicker than the Sting Ray.

So it is in life.  An individual can be young in age but experiences cause him or her to feel and be a lot older. Do you agree?

This is the start of a 4 part series that will address subjects all can continue to grow in whether we are 18 or not. You may be younger or older but does anyone know it all? Have we considered everything that will help us to grow even further?

In this “Keep Growing” series you will read about the following:

  1.  Knowing yourself
  2.  Knowledge about others
  3.  Are you really alone?
  4.  How far will you drive?

The contents of each subject will involve straightforward statements. The articles will acknowledge your outlook on culture, language, relationships, and what affects all of us.

Knowing Yourself Part 1A

May you have success in what truly matters.

Best Friends Forever? By Makayla(13yrs)

Happy Times

Best Friends Forever?

Happy Times

Happier Times. Can they come again?

You said nothing could change us.
You said nothing could break us.

With all my heart I wished to believe it, but, I couldn’t help but doubt something so impossible.
I’ve been broken for years, and now you have successfully done something no one else could.

You shattered me when you decided she was better than me.When you thought you found someone better, you left.

So when you said no one, I guess you were excluding yourself.
Best friends forever? I wish forever was longer.  :0(

How Can I Make My Study Habits Effective?

StudyingStress.jpg

The test packet is immense! As one flips through such StudyingStressa test, they may strain to try to remember how to solve each problem. How did the teacher explain it? Did the teacher explain it? All that time spent cramming last night does not seem to be paying off. Why? Such a scene as this may have occurred to us personally or maybe to someone we know. Even if we are not in school anymore, studying is still something we no doubt need to do from time to time. The question, then, is how can I make my study habits effective? To answer this, let us examine some common pitfalls to avoid.

The first common pitfalls we will discuss are procrastination and cramming. The one usually leads to the other. Staying up for hours the night before then taking a test on a sleep deficiency will not result in the best performance. The reason? Sleep, or lack thereof. Proper rest is key to retaining information. Many scientists believe the reason sleep tends to help memory retention, is because the brain moves the information from short-term memory to long term memory during sleep periods. Rather than stay up all night studying, just study what you can, and get the proper rest. If this is done from the start, the information will be retained much better. So do not procrastinate and think twice before cramming all night.

The next pitfall is studying continuously with no break periods. This can lead to fatigue and also hurts retention. We need to be relaxed. Studying takes much concentration, and therefore actually uses quite a bit of energy. This means it is also imperative to eat. We could liken studying to running a race. If a runner finished a race, then, without a break, ran another race, would there be a noticeable difference in his performance between the two races? Of course! By the second race he would no doubt be tired, hungry, and thirsty. When you sit down to study make sure to take breaks and eat something, this will result in better performance.

The final pitfall we will discuss is the environment. Imagine trying to sit down to study while the TV is blasting, a baby is crying, and the most comfortable chair around is the rock outside the house. Now imagine studying in a quiet area, with plenty of desk space, and a chair that is comfortable enough to warrant sitting in for a couple of hours. Which would you rather study in? Many people try to study in an environment not too different from the first one mentioned, but what does that do to retention? Once again, to retain information we have to be relaxed. Noise and uncomfortable surroundings can disrupt this so that we will not get much, if anything, from our material. Make sure to study in peaceful, comfortable surroundings. The local library can be invaluable for this reason alone.

There are more pitfalls to studying than we could go into here. However, if we get plenty of rest, keep well-fed, and study in a comfortable environment we can take the first steps to better retention, and thus, better study habits. Diploma-GraduateStudying does not go away with a diploma or college degree, so start building up good study habits now. It will serve you well throughout your life.

Why I like Irish Dancing

IrishDancing

Irish Dancing

In this “Young Minds and Students of Today” post, Emma (15yrs) tells us why she thinks Irish dancing is fun. The dancing involves strength and grace. The history of the dance is not clear. Some sources report that during the era(750-1060 AD) of the conquering Vikings many books from the 7th and 8th century were destroyed or lost. Books that could have shed light on the origins of this cultural dance. Today people express their reasons for learning the dance, whether it is by tradition or choice, all the way down to this 21st century people are still Irish dancing.  See the Irish dancing feature and then read Emma’s concise explanation of why she likes to Irish dance. Thank you Emma

Irish Dancing Championship

“I started doing Irish dancing when I was 3 years of age and have been doing it ever since. I come from an Irish background so its tradition. I love Irish dancing and it has become part of my life. I don’t just like participating because it’s fun and keeps me in shape, but I love to compete. Competing in dancing is an amazing experience, as everyone wants to win, but we are all so competitive. I attend dance classes 3-4 times a week and I do soft and heavy shoe. I can’t explain how important Irish dancing is to me, without it, I wouldn’t be who I am today.”
